Sorry to bother the community with this question if it has been addressed lately but I have searched this ammo forum for a while and cannot seem to get any idea about some ammo I have.

Does anyone know how many rounds came in a South African 7.62X39 Battle pack, it appears it could be 160 or 240. Is this ammo corrosive or not? How does this ammo generally rate?

Also how can you tell if Chinese ammo in a tin (that requires a tool to open) is steel core or not, or how many rounds are contained with out actually opening the can?  I already assume that these rounds are corrosive.

Thanks.

For some reason I was thinking the SA battle packs came with 200rnds in them. Been awhile since I've seen any though. I do believe that the SA is not corrosive, and was actually some very good ammo.

IIRC, all of the ChiCom 7.62x39 that came in tins were corrosive, and probably even the steel core stuff. I think they came with 550 rounds in them.

Chinese ammunition tins hold 550 if the cartridges are on strippers. If the cartridges are in boxes, the can holds 700, IIRC.
All of the ammunition on stripper clips that I've seen has been steel core, and most (but not all) of the Chinese ammunition made before the 1990s is steel core. The only way to be certain is to pull a bullet. scratch the core at the base with a small nail. You'll know if it's made of lead or steel.
I've never seen copper washed Chinese ammunition that wasn't corrosive. The only sure way to know about lacquered cased ammunition is to test.
