I've got several cases of 7.62x39 that I've stuck back over the last few years.

Figuring that the steel is either lacquer or zinc coated, I've just left them in the cardboard cases they shipped in.

Last week I opened a case of Silver Bear "8M1 Effect" to gather some rounds for the range, and noticed that instead of being shiny the cases were rather dull.

Should I get all the ammo out of the cardboard cases and boxes and loose pack them into ammo cans?

The silver bear stuff just seems to go dull.

I store my x39 in the 20 round boxes, all the boxes packed into 50 cal cans, with a little desiccant pack in each can.  I think this about the same as what most folks do.  seems to work okay, as most GI cans seal up when closed.

Good advice on the ammo cans...I still find them in good condition at gun shows for 5-8 bucks, small price to pay to protect your ammo stash, with the current market price of ammo, it's just worth to much not to store it properly.
