Can I get rid of it and how can I do it? I never oiled the exterior surfaces because it seemed like it wouldn't "spread" very well. Is this a parkerized finish?

It is a blue oxide finish. About the lowest grade finish next to bare metal in terms of protection. I use kroil and a 000 steel wool to remove light surface rust. Followed by a good gun oil/CLP like breakfree should help protect it.

Not uncommon of what you report on the Romanian rifles.

Thanks Hootbro, I used 0000 steel wool(because that's all walmart had) and CLP(because I couldn't find Kroil) and it worked perfectly. It looks better than when new!

That Florida humidity is a killer to gun finishes. I would recommend once a month wipe down with CLP to keep the rust at bay.
