I have done a few builds and now I want to start putting side scope mounts on my next couple of builds.  I don't have the slightest idea of what this entails please help before I get started (you don't have much time, I have already ordered 3 kits and 3 scope mounts although of I got the wrong type I can get different ones, just want to do it right).

uscombatdiver,

Try here for the correct side scope rail...http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bstmounts.html...and here for the "how-to"...http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/rail_install.html

There is a difference between the ak47 and ak74 rear trunnion so you need to get the correct rail for your application.

Here are some instructions on drilling the receiver and here are some riveting instructions.

In regards to the type of side mount being used, will the one from Copesdist.com or Cheaperthandirt.com simply not work for the Romanian Scope that Copesdist.com has?  Thanks for the invaluable information.

If you are referring to the Dragunov/PSL rails and the PSL scopes that Copes got in recently, I would not recommend them for an AK.  Sure the rail could be modified to work on an AK with the scope but that's the only thing that would mount on it.  No Cobra's or PK sights.

There is a difference between AK and SVD mounts.  Ak has the stop pin in the rear and SVD has it in the front.  An AK scope sits higher and farther forward to clear the leaf sight and to give better eye relief.

I would (and I do) get the correct rail for your rifle.  An AK mount attaches using the forward rear trunnion rivet.  Definitely the way to go.  I would follow Czar's advice and look to Tantal for a rail.  It's going to cost a little more than those take off PSL rails but you will be much better off.  He usually has AKM and AK74 styles available.

make sure the rail is parallel to the top rail.

I tap them and install hex screws from the inside.

use mini C-clamps and the rail as a drill guide.

You can also look @ optic_bid on ebay.com.  He sells the correct rail for ~25.00 shpd, but the wait time is can be up to a month.  He is in Belarus.  Also, he sells the low mounts and etc.

I put an MPK2 rail (from Tantal) on my 74 a few months ago. Here is a pic of the problem:

I just used a Dremel tool to remove some material from the back of the rail and to dish out the recess for the front rivet so the rail would sit flush on the receiver. It wasn't too much of a problem to install, but I was real apprehensive about drilling on the receiver. The good thing is that I have an OOW/ITM receiver so the drilling was easy. If it was a fully hardened receiver, I would have had to get some better drill bits.  Here

This method works for me too.. secret is keeping it clamped in place and parallel when you drill the front two holes.

Next, make sure to keep the open holes bolten down while you rivet..

i had to cut down some rear trunnion rivets and drill the back hole for 4.5mm - have at least one swell neck to stop shear motion..
