Im looking to find info on how to remove and replace a pinned flash hider on a recent AK purchas, and i know i saw a site that had this type of info on it along with other build info before. Can anyone direct me to a link of a place that would be helpful in this situation, or does anyone have any good ideas on how to get this thing off? Id like to do it myself to save some money. Pat |

First - you are sure that it's just pinned, right? You will likely destroy the current brake. Good News: brakes are cheap. 1) Find the "weld over" for the pin. If there IS no weld over, great. 2) GRIND the weld off with a dremmel. Expose the pin end. Might be hard to see... but often you can go over the ground area with a sharpie & expose the pin end. Think of this as poor man's dyechem. 3) DRILL the pin. Use a Cobalt drill, and watch your depth... you do NOT want to penetrate into the barrel end much at all. The drill should be bigger than the pin - makes no difference, as we are trashing the brake. 4) Unscrew brake with some force. It's here that you MAY discover that the brake was not simply pinned. Fortunately, with the pin gone? The brake may be CUT. Only do this if you have to - use a dremmel with a cutoff wheel to section the brake in the rear, force the halves apart with a screwdriver blade. 5) Clean up the threads. Opps - no threads? Not a disaster. You CAN thread your gun if you have to... either proper AK threads, or 1/2x28 AR threads (for barrels ruined by your Government). In any case - I would suggest that you PLAN on trashing the brake that you have. It's possible to do a really good job & keep these - but you'll do twice as much work for a $15 part. |
