I recently bought a second hand Romanian ak-74 with a slightly "egg" shaped trigger pin hole. When the trigger is pressed the axis pin pulls down into the bottom of the egg shaped hole. The trigger assembly appears to be of Romanian manufacture and the bolt face does not indicate a large number of rounds fired. What is the best way to fix this? Weld up the hole and redrill or weld a small re-enforcement plate to the inside of the receiver and drill it to correct size? Are there any problems with warping or heat treatment when welding up the hole? Any recommended gunsmiths? Thanks! |

Probably the best way is to weld, grind flat, redrill (5mm/7mm) and re heat treat. It is possible that the pin holes were never treated. Failure to do that causes this to happen. It is conceivable that you could form a reinforcement place. Just drill a hole in a small piece of the proper sheet metal and spot weld it in the right place. Personally, I'd just rebuild it on a known good receiver. |

If you know someone who can well, have them put a piece of flat brass (copper?) behind the egged hole. Clamp the brass in place so it doesn't move around. Then weld the hold shut. Once the hole is welded shut, remove the brass (the weld shouldn't stick to it) and then use a sander to sand the outside of the weld bubble flat. Should be pretty easy. I can't rmemeber if its brass or copper metal that you want to use as backing for a steel weld. You might then want to anneal the weld spot because it will be very hard after the welding process but a good cobalt drill should eat its way though it. |

The entire rifle was made at RATMIL factory in Romania circa 1997. This is one of the earlier MKII imports with the mag well dimples and all the X Y Y stampings. The rifle is nicer than most of the SAR-2's and WASR's except for the messed up trigger pin hole (5mm side only). I would rather repair or re-enforce the hole than replace the entire receiver. |

Another option is to add a small reinforcement plate welded inside the receiver, over the hole. Then weld the hole full over the plate. Grind and redrill the hole thru both plates. Added thickness. Of course, it only works if there is room inside for it. I noticed the old BWest receivers had a reinforcement inside for the trigger pin holes. |
