I was wondering if there is anything wrong with Tapco Flats?  I am going to build my first AK from a Romainian kit and wanted to use a flat.  So is there anything I should know about Tapco Flats?

Thanks for your help!

I have some experience with Tapco and AKBuilder flats
The AKBuilder flats are wider, this gives a little more metal
when bending the top rails.  Better leverage makes the
top rails bend some easier in my opinion.
I got the AKBulder flats from Copes.

Having built many on both types, I can tell you that the AKBuilder flat is far superior to the Tapco

What is superior about it. I have a Tapco and an AK builder flat that Im about to bend. Is there a difference in the bending or something. Ive never bent a flat before so I dont know jack really. Im working on my first build.

Not wanting to start something, BUT don't believe all the Bad of tapco flats. started building on them, then read about all the other REAL flat builders. One word to describe WORK. you will grinding and fitting more than a tapco flat, which is what they claim you won't have to do. ream this, grind that BS and lots of it. Just received a tapco flat directly from tapco-they improved from the first ones by bending the top rails for you and grinding the needed grooves out. LOTS of work saved. sure you will still grind and fit, but a lot less. Works with dpharms jig which works awesome, good people to boot. Anyway will help you from spending then learning like me.

The Tapco flats have several issues, the worst being the location of the TG mounting holes and trigger pin axis holes.
Tapco is in the process of overhauling their flats, as we speak. The new ones should be better, they've corrected several problems, but from what I understand did not address the biggest boo-boo, that being the TG holes.

Tapco and most experienced builders are aware of their short comings, which is why they are re-doing them. They're new ones will also have the top rail already bent (pending ATF approval)

said the rails are already bent from the newest shipment of flats from tapco and rail cutouts are made for you also in the post before yours. Just for your information thats all.

This is one of Tapco's new flats. As you can see, the TG holes are still pooched.

well go and buy the Correct flats from the real builders and make sure to buy the optional reamers to fix the holes when your done. and the optional correct center bushing for $$$ also.  I will be shooting my ak meanwhile.

Sorry, I didn't know that receiver flats are a touchy subject in the AK world.

Hey, I'm new

Tapco flats will work, there is no question about that. I have built many AKs using them. So have many, many others. For a long time they were the only game in town for flat builds.

All I'm saying is that there is a better option available now.
I don't know of anyone who has built on both, who will not agree that the AK-builder flat is more in spec than the Tapco. Not to metion the fact that AKB has many more models available. Besides his standard 47 flats, I have also done builds on his 74, Tantal, Polish UF and M92 flats. All were dead nuts on.

My first three builds were built on tapco flats granted they work, but after two more builds on ak builder flats Ill never use another tapco flat again and Ill be replacing those three builds with curtis`s stuff.  Here are my reasons why.

The tapco flat top rail is precut I dont care for this in that I prefer to trim the top rail myself, I prefer the ak builder lower rails because they have mag stabilizers on both sides which is a huge plus, and after having to beat the pins in on my first three builds with a hammer and maring the hell out the finish I now enjoy just slipping them in because of the nice round holes the reamers make.

And while were on the topic of ak builders stuff here is a pic of my latest build, test firing it tommorw.  It’s a polish built on a an ak builder flat, ak builder, rivets and an ak builder reinforcement plate aint she purrrrdy THANKS CURTIS!!!!!!!!

Bottom line you can build an ak with a tapco flat udrives and a bolt for a center support hell Ive done it and it works but in the end youll prolly just end up replacing it with ak builders stuff.

Have riveted all tapcos I have built, why would you have to u drive a tapco? updated tapco flats come with lower rails THAT have magwell supports on both rails< BTW.
TYRING to help out first time builder with a no bs way of building a reliable ak without  all the extras involved if possible, that is all.

BTW tapcos rivets come with a center support, so why the #@!$ would I use a bolt????????????

Again instead of having to find out later that a center support is optional, the NEW BUILDER would have it included, doyou understand KNOW what I was trying to say. HELLO MCfly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not built from either yet but the new Tapcos do look good.  I am also sorry to tell ya bud that one of your Tapco flaws was fixed, the rails now have mag stabilizers on both sides for you must have guys.  I am probably going to try one of the new Tapco ones and see what I think about it.  WHY would you want to trim the upper rails yourself, are you crazy?  lol, they suck.  I got an idea, how about you take that reamer of yours and ream the Tapco holes to the correct size, it wouldn't take no time and it would then be the same as the AK-builder ones with the correct size.  I have a set of 5mm and 7mm reamers my self, I am going to test it out on the Tapco flats and see how it works.  The only problem that I can see with them is that the FCG holes may be misaligned as that can cause the carrier to stick on the FCG parts slightly.  I may even try some AK-Builder flats, but I will end up screwing up the upper rails probably trying to grind on them.

What you just stated in your reply is exactly and only what I was trying to say. One would think that if you are going to reply to ones post ,you might actually want to read it first. Good luck in the build, wolverine, trying to give some heads up which you have found by reading-unlike some- i will halt there.
