| I saw the post where you can use the U drive type "rivets". where can I purchase them? Can they be used if the rear trunion is already drilled out? |
|
killerone sells them here on the equment exchangehere is a tutorial on how to use them. udrive build |
|
Order one of killerone's #8 u-drive kits. Also ask him for a couple #10's in case you egg out a hole. My advise is to drill and u-drive one hole at a time. Also use some red lucite. I have done two u-drive builds. The first one had a u-bolt back out, but it was easily solved by replacing it with a #10 u-bolt. Both the rifles were Romy G's with no other issues. They work great and the build was pretty simple. Would I do it again? After looking at all the posts over the past few months, I believe that a normal rivet build would be fairly easy with some simple tools. |
Why not just use red loctite and #10 U-drive screws in each hole? Wouldn't using all #10's make it stronger? |
I would think that there is simply too little metal to work with. |

I was very interested when I read this, so I posted a link to the U-drive screw tutorial over at my home forum, to see if anyone had heard of it, and I found out it's dangerous! U-drive disaster story I guess if it sounds too good to be true... |
Proof? All I see in that thread is one person relating a story with no citation or any proof at all. You can build an AK with friggin toothpicks and not get killed, how are drive screws going to be worse? |
|
I posted it to help you. He claims the U-drive screws let loose and there was an injury. Others in this forum have claimed one of their drive screws came out. Put those two together and you've got probability. Beisdes, why would that guy lie about U-drive screws and rivets? Do you think he works in PR for the rivet factory? While the "quick and easy" U-drive screws are very appealing - I'm going with a traditional rivet build for safety. Do as you like, but be sure to wear ballistic glasses when shooting. Cheers, Craig |
Thank you for your "help". But without any citation it is just hearsay. Anyhow, if a guy had a drive screw build fail that dramatically it was undoubtedly because he did a supremely shitty job of building it. I believe that a drive screw build, done with care, is no less safe to shoot than rivet or weld build. And I ALWAYS wear glasses when shooting and I hope that you do to. |

I wear U.S. Army issued ballistic glasses when shooting. Though I am inclined to remove them when shooting my 22lr Marlin carbine. As for drive screws vs rivets - well if you think about it - rivets go all the way through, whereas drive screws are, well, screws. They only go through one side. I sincearly hope all are safe when shooting, my "help" is not meant to forward the sales of rivets, it's in hope of keeping those who celebrate our 2nd ammendment safe. In the link I gave, the guy gives an exhaustive mechanical explanation as to why U-drive screws are unsafe. He doesn't sell anything therefore has no logical reason to spread propaganda. Like they say about most things - you can do it quick or you can do it right. I wouldn't mind if the AK I build becomes an heirloom to my daughter - I'm going to build it with mil-spec rivets so it will last safely. *this post is not meant to draw flames* Craig |
