| Why do you have to remove the firing pin and the extractor to check headspace? |
| It really depends on your guages. Some of them have an extractor groove cut in the base just like a live round and a hole drilled in the bottom where the primer would be on a live round. If this is the case you dont have to remove the extractor and pin. If the guage has a solid base then either the extractor or firing pin will keep the base of the guage from making contact with the bolt face and result in a false reading. |
Does anyone know of a source that makes gauges that would not require me to strip the bolt? |

Some time ago, I stumbled into a discussion (somewhere, sorry don't remember where) about the difference between SAMMI spec and Europeon military spec headspace guages for these rifles, and DO recall that the military guages were HIGHLY recomended for the AK. Something about that the tolerances as reccomended by SAMMI for sporting cartridges were far tighter that for military? It's been a while, and just don't recall the details, but thought this might be a good time and place to mention it, and see what turns up, as there are bound to be some feller's around here that could enlighten us on realities. In other words, is this bullshit or what? PCM |
