Well this is going to be my first build.  I tried to do as much research on an ak build before I start or started posting  here.  Since I am a newbie I dont know which receiver I want to use.  I found the kit that I want for 225.  If you guys could check out these two receivers and the kit and tell me which receiver and if it looks like a good kit i would greatly appreciate it.  I noticed on the Ewbanks receiver there was an extra set of holes drilled in the front.  Is it better to have them predrilled?
This is the Nodak one

go with the NDS. You'll have to drill the front trunion holes but its a better receiver.

This kit from Akron says that they are hand selected and of premium quality.  Now this kit is gauranteed to have parts with all matching numbers but it is 299 shipped.  Do you guys think this is a better kit or value then the other one i posted.  I called gun things this morning and they said that most of their kits have matching parts.

Agreed.  The finish in Polish kits is junk no matter how much of it remains.  Save your money and get a kit with a good barrel and a poor finish and just refinish it when you build it.  Unless you want to do like I did and get a Polish kit with a poor finish and make your receiver to match.

Agreed +2

That finish on those Polish rifles will come off with anything stronger than saliva.  The only advantage I can see by getting a premium quality kit is that the wood handguards would proabably be in better condition.  Definitely don't pay extra money for the metal finish though.  It is crap.

Thanks for the input so far so is the general consensus to get the nds receiver...  Anyone out there find a cheaper polish underfold kit than the one i posted for 225... Also is it better to have all matching numbers or is that a big concern.  If you guys have any links to better polish kits post them up.
Thanks a ton

FWIW, Gunthings is a good company to deal with in my experience, if you go that route.

Good luck, you may even be able to find some guys in PA who can give you some help

Well it looks like i will be ordering the parts this upcoming week.  I guess i am going to go with the gunthings kit for 225 its not too terribly much more than the cheaperthen dirt kit... Anyone have experience with the cheaper then dirt kit before I order from gunthings.  Anyways are there any ak specific tools i should buy like the headspace gauge.  I have a full garage of tools so if it is not an ak specific tool i should already have it.

I got my kit from AIM Surplus. Matching numbers all around decent. Barrel looks great on the inside. $218 shipped.

definitely decided to go with the nds receiver.  Just need to know what "tools"  I should order with the kit.  Like which head spacing gauges and from who.  You guys have been a big help so far.

NDS!! mark your front holes after getting the mag fit tight - drill SMALL hole check on trunnion and open them up slowly keep rechecking till you have them sized and in the right spot - go slow and it isn't dificult. I use a dremel diamond tip pointy bit things to open the holes up slowly and in the right direction depending on where it needs to sit from the mag fitting.

my kit was pretty beat so I did a battleworn look NDS-1P

Thanks for the info jldesign...  Hopefully I will have all parts ordered tomorrow.  This is going to be a rivet build as well.  I am going to make a rivet jig in the upcoming week.  Too bad i cant build from flats since i have access to a forge that i could use to heat treat it.  I pretty much have access to a full machine shop.  Cnc machines, laser engravers, spot welders the whole nine, but since this is my first build i want to make it as easy as possible on myself before investing my time to make a bunch of jigs.

Good deal, keep us posted!

jldesign, what did you use for a finish on the receiver?  I like that look a lot, one of my kits is similar, and I think I'd like to go that route.

Well I am ordering the nds receiver definitely tomorrow.  Now i am going to order the kit from either gunthings or aimsurplus.  The cheaper than dirt kit is by far the cheapest but for some reason or another i am leaning towards aim.  So is a barrel press not needed?  Where can i get head space gauges?
