Hi all.  I have never built a gun before.  Is it worth trying?  Does it actually save money, or does one do it simply for the knowledge that you put it together yourself?

I was asking because I like the look of the all black AK's people have on here.  However, I can not afford buying a nice one straight up...  I just do not know my options.

most the time you cant build an ak much cheaper then you can buy one

but the quality is better

and most of the rifles we build you cant get any other way

buying the rifle isnt an option

If your time is worth more than $15 per hr, you don't come out ahead moneywise on building. The thing is if you consider the labor as fun time, then you can build a quality gun cheaper than you can buy it in some cases (consider a Global Trades romy kit on a heat treated receiver, with complete finish and polymer furniture for under $500...hell of a deal).

Thing is, it's really rewarding to build, and once you get going, you will know more about AKs, how they function, how to fix them, and how to make them totally reliable. That is golden to me.

Plus on the boards here you have resources to get you out of all kinds of trouble in building...just ask (but use the search button first!).

good luck
