I'm completely new to the assemble-yourself world.  I was looking on the Centerfire Systems site, and see a AK VZ-58 7.62x39 Parts Kit Folding Stock for $90.  Seems cheap.

So, I do some reading.  It seems that these aren't AK's.  -- But, they have a faster rate of fire (like it matters in semi anyway) - and are Piston operated instead of gas.  --- And from what I understand with HK's new M16, Piston's are "better" than gas systems???

So, would this be a better gun, then?  Does it take an AK receiver, or would I have to find a specific VZ.58 receiver?

THANKS in advance for all your time!!!

I guess I should have asked this first.  Do AK's use gas, or do some use piston?

You've gotten some bad information.  All "piston systems" with the exception of a couple of WW2 german anachronisms use gas to press the piston back into the bolt carrier and cause it to reciprocate.  Therefore, your comparison is extraneous.  What you probably mean is "gas pistons are superior to direct gas impingement" which is what the M16 uses.  This is debateable, but anyway...

Both the AK-47 and the VZ-58 use gas pistons. However, they use them in differant ways.  In the AK-47 the gas piston is integral to the bolt carrier.  In the VZ-58, it is seperate.  The receivers for the AK and the VZ are completely differant. Even the magazines will not interchange.

Receivers are made for the VZ in the US... by Ohio Ordnance. An 80 percent receiver is being made by Prexis-Sten but it is a serious comittment of time and expertise to build on.  The prexis receiver is nearly 500 dollars anyway.  The Ohio Ordnance one, closer to 800... and you still have to worry about US parts.

If I were you, I'd simply purchase an Ohio Ordnance built VZ if I wanted one.

They are not aks..........don't use ak parts........and are expensive to build or buy ..............thats why they are such good deals for kits ............thats also why you don't see em flying off the shelf.
