Hey Pistol Builders - This is probably just a Gunsmithing 101 type of question, but here goes: How have you guys been doing the final cut & crown on your pistol barrels? Do you just cut & face it in the lathe & then manually crown, or do you crown the barrel on the lathe? If so what type of tool/bit do you use to cut the crown? What is the maximum acceptable run out on a dial indicator to get acceptable crown? It looks like the easiest method for me right now (with the tools I've got) would be to cut & face the muzzle & then cut an 11 deg. crown on it, assuming I can get tight enough controll on the run out. Any comments/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill |
| Well, here's an "oldtimer" way of doing it. Cut the barrel in the lathe off square. Take a brass pan head screw with the head larger than the bore and some valve lapping compund. Put the compound on the head and the threaded portion in an electric drill and lap a crown into the barrel. It sounds cheesy I know but it actually works well. (and is inexpensive) |
