I am doing some work for a local friend here, and he is partially paying me with a nice condition SAR-1. I would like to convert it into a sbr, and have some questions, if this is in the wrong forum sorry mods go ahead and move it. I would like to take off the front sight, and the either mod the gas block to a gas block/fs combo, or change it to a AK-142B where the gas block is now. I would like to keep the piston and the gas tube at regular length. I figure if I cut the barrel just enough in front of it to thread it, the barrel will end up around 10 inches or so. First off, where can I get a fake suppressor to silver solder onto the end of the barrel to keep it legal until my sbr paperwork comes through? Secondly, I have read the thread about the poor mans sight/gas block combo. I have also seen at KVAR the AK-142B combo that really looks good. If I knock off the stock fs and gas tube adn replace it with the AK-142B, will it line up with the current gas port opening? Do I need to enlarge the gas port opening for what I am planning? Also, I would like to replace the stock with a folder conversion from ace stocks. I am willing to cut the tail off the rear trunnion, how much more involved is putting in the AK Internal Receiver Block beyond cutting the tail off the trunnion? Does this mod work well with a left side folder, so as it doesn't get in the way of the bolt handle? Finally, I would assume I can get a crowning device and a threading device from brownells to dress up the front end of the barrel. Am I correct in this assumption, that a 308 crowning device would be good, and where to buy the threader?? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to do this right. The way I am describing should give me a pretty handy cqb weapon, and I will remove the faux suppressor once my paperwork comes through! I am interested in the same information. K-Var says out of stock on the sight/gas block combo unit and Krebs has a real nice one but it says it is higher then a normal block. I really would like to make a gun just like the Krebs KTR-03V. I'd would like to try it out of a Saiga 5.56 conversion. Any help out there? |

dpharms.com/us-made-zastava-grenade-launcher-black-p-193.html Your first question: This is a copy of the Yugo grenade launcher (the price is right and it is 14mm threads (for poor mans build)). They used to have a fake can, but it takes the 24mm threads (for the K-var option). So depending upon what your length of you shortened barrels and the front sight arangement you come up with, one of the two could work. second: Not sure if that is a 90deg or 45deg gas block? So not sure. As to the gas port the gerneral thought here is to make sure that the end of the barrel needs to be at least 1" in front of the gas port to work. Which that sight/gas block combo will assure that. Finally: if you are using the K-var 142B it is already threaded for a muzzle attachment so no re-threading of your barrel is needed. (so go with the 24mm fake can above). If you go the poor mans front sight base then you will have to thread. As stated above there is a good guy on EE that rents the threading tools. (as you know whatever you come up with has to be 16" in OAL. I would make sure that it was a 1/4" longer  )

+1 I think this is good advice. The muzzle attachment will add additional back pressure so when it is removed the dynamitics of the rifle could change. I would hate to have is all running, get your paper work back, then take off the can and have it short stroking. Then you would have to re-pull the the front sight/gass block and redrill the port larger... |
