What is the difference between these two gasses and is it really that critical to use one over the other to heat treat rails and holes?

You can use either. What do you have?  I bought a Mapp kit from sears and an extra oxygen bottle.  You can get it hot enough to quench the first time and turn color the second time with mapp.  I read a great thread here on how to heat treat.  do a search.

If one is gas welding, acetylene is the way to go.  As far as heat treating, not alot of difference.  The oxy-acetylene allows a very hot pin point flame and if one is doing alot of work; it is the better way to go.  For the average guy doing heat treatment etc... on a limited basis I would say mapp is the way to go.

Do you have to use the MAPP/Oxyegen combo, or will the MAPP by itself get the metal hot enough? I have MAPP gas and a propane style torch.
