| i just assembled my first 7.62x39 romanian ak-47 type kit. the rifle action works okay, ut when i try to insert the magazine, the magazine is catching on the lower lip of the leading edige of the right lower receiver. i think i saw a BIY article on 7.62x39 ak that said that that was normal and to grind the bottom of the lower right rail off. i cant find it now, does tha seem correct? |

Not sure what you are catching on. Sounds like it may be the mag stabilzer on the bottom of the lower rail. If this is the case you must trim the mag stabilizer until you have the magazine lockup and stickout straight from the bottom. On Tapco flats/rails there is only one mag stabilizer so when you have trimmed it enough to get the mag in, it sometimes sticks out at an angle. You need to keep removing material (slowly) until the mag sticks straight out. Tapco flats are sort of a PITA for mag fitting IMHO. The 4 trigger guard holes at the mag catch are usually about 40 thousandths too far forward. If you are using a Tapco flat, you will have to probably deal with that problem too. AK-builder flats have the mag stabilizers on both rails, so you need to trim both of them. I have also had to trim the rear area of the magwell opening directly under the selector stop plate. I had one build where I had to trim the bottom of the mag catch itself just a bit to get mag lock up. You sort of just have to go a little bit at a time, looking carefully at what is keeping the mag from going to full, straight, lock-up. You could have mulitple fitting issues, so after you trim one area, and still don't have good lockup, make sure that there isn't something else in the way before your remove too much material from any one area. You'll get it. Good luck. |
