I am in the process of building my first AK,  a M70AB2.  I have removed the old receiver and am in the process of rmoving whats left of the old rivets in the front trunion.  My brother is a machinist and has volunteered to do this for me at his job sight.  My question is, how deep should he go when he drills these things out?  If all goes well with this one I hope to assemble a M[}:D70B1 after this and then a Polish underfolder, and maybe an SA-85.  Thank You.

Need to know your fastener choice, screws or rivets?

Do yourself a favor and pull the barrel.

I agree with morning wood. Once the receiver material is off the front trunnion, remove the barrel pin and pull the barrel. THEN remove the rest of the four fowardmost rivets.

Recently seen a post or two from guys that tried drilling out the rivets and went too far (into the barrel). They sure wished they hadn't done that.

If your buddy has access to a shop, remove the barrel pin with a shop press or vise, then you can use a gear puller to remove the barrel.

To make things easy (I'm doing a few) I bought this. It does make things easy.

My advice: Go rivets.

Another vote for pull the barrel.
And if you get the barrel out why not do it right? (with rivets)

Pull it so you don't accidentally drill into the barrel. It happens all the time and you have to pull it anyway, so you might as well do it now.

Thats weird............ive never had trouble drilling too deep with a dewalt hand drill...........I guess if you use a drill press you may accidently overdrill. I guess it depends on how much you trust yourself.

Its really not that hard to pull the barrel and use rivets.....modifiied bolt-cutters are easy to make and very quick to use. I screwed my first biuld together because the botl cutter thing hadnt been come up with at the time. ....I have since went back and redone that biuld with rivets. Anyway if you do use screws go ahead and pull the barrel to avoid problems.

Same here.  Measure, measure, measure.  It is only about 3/8".  Both of my rivets by the chamber I drilled and they popped just as they drilled out.

Sorry skipped over the part where you said you were doing a screw build.. in that case don't bother pulling the barrel.  Just drill but be careful :)

Pull the barrel and rivet the gun - please.....

Pull or push the barrel out.  I am a prime example of why you should.  I am working on my first kit, a Yugo underfolder and I drilled through my barrel.  Now I have had to purchase another barrel and will have the headache of headspacing.  I was kind of leary to take the barrel out because I dont have a press.  My buddy phatmax has a press but we live too far away to ever hook up for a build session.  So I went to Advance Auto and bought a pully puller.  Make sure you have already removed the old remaining piece of the receiver from the front trunion. Use the pully puller along with some nickels or a nut that is just smaller than the diameter of the barrel and push the damn thing out.  It also helps to soak the barrel/trunion in some penetrating oil and to clamp the pully puller and trunion into a vice ( it keeps the pully puller from wanting to move around).

Hope this helps.

Working on my first build myself and pulling the barrel isnt that big a deal. Of course Im a little curious about how easy it will go back in but I got some local help from the forum here so ill see when the time comes.
Back to pulling the barrel. My press is kinda weak but it got the pin out but not enough muscle to push the barrel. I went to a local machine shop with everything set up that I would need to do it and the guy was so interested in hearing about building my own rifle he didnt charge me a thing for the 10 min it took to press it out. I would expect he wouldve only charged me $10 or so anyway. Another option if you dont want to buy a puller. Go to the autoparts store like Orieleys or something where you can barrow by deposit. Ya get all your money back when you bring the tool back.
Building a rifle I know how the parts can add up but pick up the phone bros, you will be suprised at what you can get for little or nothing.
