Ok, I have gotten my bolt cutter ground to the point that they are usable, though I need some shim pieces to buck some of the rivets.  My question is how do you keep the rivets straight while crushing them?  I did a couple practice squeezes, not to full crush, and when the rivets are starting they are bending off center.

Should I slightly dimple the shim to keep the rivet centered while crushing?  I am worried when I do the ones on the rifle itself, they are going to go sideways.

Or should I trim the rivet to a certain length so only a bit protrudes?  is there a proper formula for the amount of rivet shaft about the hole to get a proper set?

Thanks!

So yes there IS a formula!!!

1.5 x diameter of shaft, should stick through.
