On my first build, I put the front and rear trunion a little too far forward on an OOW receiver and Romanian kit.  This is evidenced by the failure of the safety to go all the way up (although it does work fine and can't bet bumped off.)  The rear of the safety hits the cover.  This is an easy fix with a dremel on the dust cover to take a little metal off.

The other piece of evidence is that the mag release is fully extended with the magazine in.  This allows the rear of the magazine a little up-and-down play, 0.050" to be exact.  This is how I set it, not knowing any better and never having handled an AK before.  Now I have observed that there should be a little pressure from the mag release spring pushing against the rear of the mag.  The release in this more verticle position is about 0.03 - 0.04" higher and there is much less up-and-down play at the rear of the mag.

My only concern with this is that the bolt has less "bite" on the cartridge head and feeding problems could result.   Actually, the bolt seems to have plenty of "bite," and, 150 rounds of all sorts of ammo including lead tipped and no failures of any type.

I can fix this with a little longer mag release.  Is there such a thing?  Is it something to worry about or if it works, let well enough alone?

THANKS!

I dunno if anyone make a phyically longer mag catch. However it seems like the easiest fix would be to remove the catch and have it built up with some weld.

of course I also subscribe to the theory of ,if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I thought of welding something on it.  That would probably be the most simple thing to do.
