Okay, I've heard a couple different things, but I wanted to get the straight answer and didn't see it up in any of the stickys. Through various trades and purchases I have one of the Romy kits, G2 FCG, and US Slant break, as well as (I was told it was) a Yugo UF stock and trunion. Now, I've heard that the Yugo rear trunion is a different size (narrower) than say a Polish, Romy, or other Combloc trunion. Is this a true statement? If so, how big is the difference, and would it be possible to use this trunion in a non-Yugo receiver without lots of modification? I'm just curious at this point.

Thanks for your help all. I hope I can get help and maybe build a rifle over Christmas break when I go home. Then I will have a "standard" AKM, an RPK copy, and an Underfolder. I think I'll be happy with these three. Famous last words, right?

you need 1 more us part
i put followers and plates in all my shooter mags helps alot with the parts count and is cheap

now onto the rear trunnion
the trunnion is undersized
you basicly have 2 options

#1 build on an oow its a thicker rec
its good enough for most peeps but it wont be perfect

#2 build on a 1.6mm
you will have to mill the front down to match
its not a job for a new builder but you will have 1 hell of a nice ak when your done

Thanks socandyman. Here's one more question: would it be possible to just buy/trade my Yugo rear trunion for a standard rear trunion and use the Folder stock with that? Both of your suggestions were good, but if I could just swap out for a standard trunion, I think that would eliminate most headaches. Alternatively, could I just "shim" the rear trunion into the standard AKM receivers that are on the market? It's still got the remains of the receiver stub on it. Could I just go to town on it with a grinder until it fit into the receiver? I'd like to be able to do a rivet build, so I wouldn't think it would be a problem  for strength or "holding together."
I know, lots of questions from just one post, but I'm trying to pick everyone's brains. My "building" has followed an interesting progession: Single stack conversion with appropriate parts, finding a post ban "butthole" and adding parts, and now I want to move onto a full build, or at least as close as I can get.

Hello dar48,

Since I have some Yugo and Romy parts laying around I thought I would measure them and put in my 2 cents.  The Yugo trunnions are 1.208" wide, the Romy trunnions are 1.256" wide. A difference of  .048".  If you used a standard 1mm receiver to match the Romy at the front you should be able to shim each side of the rear to make it fit. I think you should be able to get .020" brass sheet in small pieces at a hardware store and it shouldn't be too hard to work with. Pinching the receiver an extra .004 in on each side should not be noticeable but if you looked close from the rear you could probably see the shims.

Happy with only three AKs?  You are in the wrong forum.

Thanks old school. I was thinking I could shim it with the receiver section (which would take a normal finish), but the brass might be a good idea. I guess I'm from the wrong state...all you guys are Oregonians, and I'm from the liberal neighbor to the north. Oh well, there are a bunch of builders in WA too.

you could shim it you dont wanna use the orig rec tho
your new rec needs to fit into the slots

also if you look arpund you should be able to find a standard trunnion
wich would solve all your probs :)

The old Yugo receiver shell is .060". Conceivably you could shim it only on one side and perhaps with a little grinding it would be pretty close. That's not a bad idea either, and much easier since the holes are already perfectly cut for you. Pay close attention as you disassemble the underfolder, one side might be better to shim than the other, considering how all the little pieces fit together. My guess is that it would be better to shim the left side but it may not matter. You may end up trying both before you are done. Make sure you drill the two little holes that are hidden by the pistol grip so you can remove the pins if you have to redo it (I guess at that point you would need an extra rivet set too).  I have seen Yugo receivers both with and without the holes drilled and naturally I had to drill them myself to disassemble the stock if they weren't there to start with.
