As most of you know, the recently released Yugo M70AB2's (AK47's) need a different receiver than the "average" ak.

This is because of the trunnion being made much larger, and with a "bulge"
Here is a picture of an AK74 trunnion next to a yugo (RPK type) trunnion.
I didn't have an AK47 trunnion for the picture, so the inside diameters aren't the same
AK74=24mm, Yugo (RPK)=23mm

But they are similar.

Some people have wondered if they could just mill down the sides of the yugo trunnion.

The simple answer is no. The width of the "standard AK47 or AK74" trunnion is 32mm.
The width of the Yugo trunnion (on the bottom) is about 30.50mm
In order to use a standard receiver, you would have to shim the bottom sides and mill the top sides.
So a good deal of metal work will have to be done before you could use a "standard" receiver.
It would probably be easiest to use a spare AK47 trunnion instead.

The build quality  on these Yugo's is much better. You don't have to be an engineer to appreciate the attention to detail they put into manufacturing these rifles. They were made to last. The tool marks are clearly visable, but then again, these aren't presentation guns!

I have been thinking but havent looked into this idea yet too much yet. I was thinking of using the old receiver bulges and try to mig weld them on to a regular receiver. I just saw you pointed out that the yugo trunnion is skinnier so maybe I could use a armory1.6 mm receiver and since it requires you to mill away material on a regular trunnion to fit it might just fit on the yugo trunnion as is. I think with the gas shielded mig I can get it welded on there very easily and the grind smooth. Fitting is gonna be the big question here. Anyoen else have an opinion?

Interesting! I'd like to think the folks who Harlan@FAC is coordinating with has taken the same detailed measurements in preparation to build a proper semi-auto receiver. I plan to build on a dimensionally correct receiver or not build at all. These Yugoslavian rifles are absolute tanks. If proper receivers aren't made, I suppose the barrel assembly would make an interesting table lamp base.
