I just wanted to share that you don't need a press to turn flats into receivers.....  I used a couple C-clamps with a 555th jig, and it worked just fine.  Just gotta be careful, go slow and evenly back and forth across it.  It will take some leverage to start the bend, but once it gets going, it's smooth sailing.

Is it more work?  Absolutely.  But a viable option for those of you who have the clamps already, and no press.  By the way - you will need at least 2 clamps.  It can't be done with one.

That is exactly how I bent my first 4 flats with my 555th jig.

Just curious....anyone know offhand how long the flats are?

I remember when Plinker first started with his jig. He jacked up his car and lowered it to bend the flats. Hey, whatever works!

Thanks!  This means my 12" brake should be able to handle the bending.

I figured with my luck it'd end up being something like 13"

I recall people having troubles getting the bends right using non-hydraulic brakes. I could be wring though.

If you have a good brake and knowledge of the proper clearances and such, the brake will work.  I ruined my first two flats on a cheap Harbor Freight brake.  There is simply too much play in the brake to acheive a sharp corner.

I am waiting on a 555 jig now in order to do them right.
