Hey all.. Just got in the latest Northern Tool catalog. While leafing thru it I spotted this and being new to the whole homebuilding thing I started to wonder how effective this would be for folding flats. Its much cheaper than all the Jigs I've seen, and doesnt require a press to use.. Thoughts?

| RS39 is correct. I'm an aircraft mechanic and have delt with sheetmetal brakes quite a bit. There are actually formulas for figuring out things such as bend radius, set back ect....ect... if you have this info along with the material thickness you could, with practice, bend your own receiver flats. But the price and ease of the better jigs out on the market out weights the problems associated with the brake you have listed above. |
+1 on QUIB's comments. By the time you buy that jig, get the extra little pieces & parts that aren't included, do all of the PITA measurements (with the additional cost for the micrometers that you'd probably need), you'd be just as well off to buy a dedicated flat bender and be done with it. |
| I have heard that it can be done with a break and even a cheap break but it would need to be renforced. You also have to remember the mag demples so you would have to modify the break to allow room for these. I think it would be a major pain in the @ss and by the time you cover the cost of everything including the destroyed flats your probably looking at the price of a jig. |
