After reading the FAQ, and having decided that the screw method will be best suited for the tools and setup that I presently have; I've got some questions:

Thanks for the input.

When you get your first kit, just be sure it is a complete kit with matching numbers.  Type isn't as important as it is all there, and it matches.

It doesn't matter which caliber, as long as the lower rails are for the right one, or you can modify the  rails yourself.

You don't get full auto parts with a parts kit, and you don't get full auto parts from anyone before, after, or during.  If you need full auto, go buy a registered full auto, do the paperwork, and live happy.  Otherwise go to jail.

The AMD-63 kit as listed is good, but the problem is they don't have them in stock.  Remember to use the correct number of U.S. parts(that means the correct number of imported parts.

  • What is the best kit for the first build?

  • They are all pretty easy to build with..  for a first build I would look for something with a full length barrel, it will be one less part and step to finish your build..  and something with a standard stock..  as there is less milling to do...
  • Which is easier for the first build, a 5.45 or a 7.62?

  • 7.62 kits are typically pretty used with the exceptions of the AMD's..  the 5.45 kits are typcially brand new...  which ever suits your desire..
  • When you get a kit, do you get the full auto parts? If so, what do you do with them to keep the JBTs from shooting your dawg?

  • Just toss the auto sear and you will be fine...  or if you are going to replace the FCG for US parts then toss/sell what you don't need...
  • Opinions on this Guns and Stuff AMD 63 parts kit? Is it worth it?

  • Those kits are long sold out..  FAC just doesn't seem interested in updating their website

Thanks for the input.

The FA parts come with some kits and not with others.

The kit you choose is all up to you. I like 'em all. I like the 7.62 for a cheaper build but the 5.45's are too cool.
Check out interordnance for some Romy's coming (full legth non folder 7.62)..Global for Tantals (folder 5.45 has unusual selector lever placement), and Centerfire for Yugo's (7.62 and RPK style front trunion folder and non). I think DPH,  Wolfsburg Bob have some 5.45's left.
My suggestion would be to call and speak with them to confirm availabilty/shipping.

If you build a Ak 74 kit realize that the 10-32 screw kits being offered probably wont work and you will probably need to use 1/4 screws instead but other than that they are probably about equal as far as a build.

Am thinking of using the Global Trades 1.6mm stamped receiver and an Hungarian AMD63 Parts Set for my first build. Anyone have any opinions on this?

Talk about karma. I gave away some 10 round AK mags that were found while cleaning out the storehouse back on the family farm, and one of the people that had spoken up for some has IM'ed me that he'd keep me posted on the next time that he got some AMD63 kits! What went around, came around!!

I would use the 1.0mm receivers instead.  The 1.6mm requires the trunnions to be milled to fit - the 1.0 doesn't.

That's what I'm finding out. Allegedly the 1.6mm is stiffer & more accurate but with a 7.62x39 I don't think that is going to be that much difference in the effective range of that round.

Have been googling around but haven't found the "Type" of the AMD63. Anyone got a link so that I can educate myself on this??

BTW. Saw some kits at makarov.com. Any comments on these?

Thanks for all the help.

Agreed on the 1.6. My suggestion is to use the 1.0
For the 1.6, you have to mill the sides of the trunions, then you have to grind the bottom of the upper rail. It's much more work and you prob don't get much gain unless you are making an RPK or similar for heavy use.
