Anybody out there rent the riveting jigs necessary to do the front trunnion and trigger guard? We started grinding on an old pair of bolt cutters to do the front trunnion but I like options! Thanks! |
bolt cutters work excellent for the front and rear trunnions, I did a Polish under folder and am just about to start on a Bulgy AK74S. |
Well that's the truth, but if you use the boltcutter rivet tool you may be surprised at just how easy it is. I ground them down with a cut-off tool, but a dremel with an adequate supply of reinforced cut-off disks would work too. pookieweb.dyndns.org:61129/AK/rivet/boltcutters/boltcutter.htm Where at in OK are you? My fam is in S. OKC near Moore. Visited my bro recently and got to fondle his M4 clone. Must admit that Model1 kit gun looks as nice as my Colt. We didn't get to shoot unfortunately :( |

North OKC! MR. H.C Pookie - We really appreciate all of the guidance and effort you have gone to help everyone! The bolt cutter idea is outstanding and we are going to try them. Your website has become the "builder's bible" for me. Thank you, Sir! It looks like we are going to have two to three more friends get involved in building AKs. Of course, they want someone else to "pave" the way. I don't care if they "ride" on our coattails, but it is not going to cost ME money to do their work. Anyway, once again my gratitude to you, Mr. HC Pookie. You are a GOOD man! |

HC Pookie, we used your bolt cutter/ rivet tool tonight and it worked like a champ. Had to hit it on the grinder a couple of times after test fitting it to make it fit, after that, BINGO! We used a piece of an electric motor shaft, ground on two sides- to fit around the rails and cross support - to rivet the trigger guard in position. Ball peen hammer and a 5 inch vise worked fine. We riveted the rear trunnion with the ball peen also. Everything looks good and feels tight! Tomorrow we will probably do the other AMD kit, and blind pin the flash hiders on the barrels. We are going to put the barrels in the freezer after we finish the flash hiders and probabl y install them Monday night. Tuesday afternoon will be spent test firing the "home built" AKs! Thanks again for all your good advice! |

HC, I live in far north OKC, by Lake Hefner. A few miles north, my pardner has 3 acres in a rural setting. As far as shooting, we both belong to the OKC Gun Club. But for pure blasting fun, we usually go a farm I own about 25 miles north of OKC. Just spray painted mine with barbque paint tonight. Not a fancy finish, not a fancy gun. Just one for grins and giggles! We will shoot quite a few rounds this weekend. We only fired 3 rounds each last night to see if they would work OK. Neither gun missed a lick! Some friends want to try them out before they jump on the bandwagon. Like I said, we will help them, they can use our HC Pookie special to rivet. One of them actually asked why didn't we buy a press and make our own receivers from flats. I told him, that was a good thought and maybe they should buy one. We would help them do it all that way if they did.

That's great! That's one good thing about OK, there's always plenty of land. My bro mentioned there's a big MG shoot coming up soon and he's all excited about it: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=25&t=195013 Heh, I just discovered he's on this forum at RatTerrier. Now I'm gonna have to go give him a hard time... :D |

HC, we welded the flash hiders on with a mig welder! It was a mistake. The weld cracked on one side of the barrel/muzzle brake joint. I used a blind pin also so I don't have to worry about the legalities. Everything went fine until I saw the crack. Ah, hell! Guess now I'll have to build another one and use silver solder this time! |
