So I've built a couple ak's so far. Last night I was thinking about my next build and it occures to me that I may have been doing some damge to my recievers during my builds.
So I put it to the guru's out there....what have you been doing
Once I fold my flat, install the rails, install the trunions and rivet them, I then degrease the whole thing and then paint it (doesn't matter with what for this question). This is what most people have been doing to some degree.
So my question is what about the bare metal under the trunions? Will it rust over time? Should I paint the reciever beofre installing the trunions and rivets? If I do that I run the risk of scratching the reciever while I rivet it up. Most threads I've read people use the same prossess I did.
What have yo all done?
Thanks in advance

I have just got into building. That is Ak's....You pose a good question. When I thought back onto the builds I have done in the past the receivers where already finished...ie. AR's and FAL's.

My first AK build the receiver was finished after the build. My last I finished first. No particular reason why I just did. I do not know this for a fact but I would guess that at the factories the receivers are finished first and then assembled. Does it make a difference?

Here again I am not sure, I would like to know also but, MY rule of thumb is if ever in doubt do it like it was done at the factory. Just my .02

its done like you have been doing it at factory
they built the rifle then finished it
if you look on a demilled with cut rec the rec and trunnion are unfinished

I park the whole thing before I start.

My two cents:
Unless you will be in a humid or wet environment, or the rifle is not properly cleaned, my thoughts are that you should be fine.  Sooner or later, oil and/or grease residue will find its way to the bare metal.

I paint under the trigger guard and trunions before assembly.  The main reason is that I often have guns aound a saltwater environment, and two pieces of metal touching without a surface coating are looking for an excuse to rust.  For most people, I don't think there would be a problem.  Of course, you can eliminate any worry if you give it a quick shot of paint anyway.
