When drilling the holes in the reciever for the front trunnion rivets I was wondering how tight or loose should these holes be when placing a rivet in them.  Should you have to hammer the rivet in the hole to seat it before pressing the rivet or can there be a little bit of clearance around the rivet being as it will fill the hole when pressed.

I'm so anxious to get this first build done with and out of the way so I can move on to the next one but I also want to make sure I get it right.  It will be a shooter but for the most part it is intended as a learning device for future builds.

from my point of veiw, if there is play, then that would allow for more of a potential shearing affect on the rivet with the constant banging of the bolt carrier into the front trunnion.

But there won't be any play after the rivet is pressed being as the rivit expands in the hole when the shaft is compressed.  I think the addition of a good counter-sink at the crucial points will also help with rivet shearing.

Good point, about the expanding...my understanding is counter sinking the receiver some into the trunnion  then rivet. is the way to go.  Is that what you meant?

For goodness sakes, don't pound the rivets into the hole.  You'll expand it and NEVER get it in.  You should carefully ream the hole out if it is undersized or use a punch to align the hole if it is just misaligned.  The more you expand the hole, the more room there'll be for the rivet to expand.  You want as tight a fit as possible.

I dont think he meant that he was going to smash them in place,...just a little extra push for a tight fit..

If your trunnion has countersunk holes then you need to dimple the receiver to match and use swell neck rivets. You want as snug a fit as possible. Kvars website has good info on proper riveting with swell neck rivets.

the rivets are 3/16 but the holes are drilled to 5/32
hope this helps

Actually, the Bulgarian swell neck rivets are slightly bigger than the regular rivets.  I had to drill the swell neck holes with an 11/64" bit and the regular ones with a 5/32".  I already counter-sunk the receiver to match the trunnion.  I think just this alone will do wonders at preventing the rivets from shearing.

Thanks for all the help guys.
