I've seen a lot of people beadblast before a new finish.  I've got a WASR-10 in need of serious refinishing, and a buddy with a sandblaster at his garage. Anything wrong with sandblasting gun parts?

(Glass) Beadblasting will leave behing a smoother finish than sandblasting, generally speaking. Depending on the grit of the sand that is used.

ETA, sand will take off the old finish quicker......

Lauer Weaponry and GunKote suggest using Aluminum Oxide.

Check out their sites.

I have read that sandblasting may be better than beadblasting because it leaves a rougher finish for the new paint to adhere to.

Anyway, I just sandblasted my SAR2, and will be applying the Moly Coat in the next week or so. I guess I'm about to find out!

Bead blasting will polish the metal, which will make for a very weak adhesion of any spray on finish.  Most spray on finish manufacturers recommend aluminum oxide with a grit range between 80 and 120.

On a side note I'm using glass beads to remove the original finish being that they tend to only peen the metal rather than remove it.  I will follow up with a blasting of aluminum oxide before I spray on the finish though.
