I've had a Romak 991 for about 5 years now. Wanted something cool to do when I'm bored of woodworking this winter so bingo I commited and purchased an AMD-65 Parts kit and a laser cut receiver flat w/ rails.  I have a couple of quesitons now that I'm already commited to doing this.

How do I position the front trunion and the tang? I know at the top of the forum it says to do this before you weld the bottom corners of the laser cut flat.  How do I know exactly where they should be positioned in the receiver?

I think I'm going the screw kit route for my first time but also thought of welding, what is the serious dis-advantage to welding?

Great forum and a ton of info, I hope I'm not asking too dumb of a set of quesitons here..

Thanks, Jimbo

I'm going to be welding mine Oxy-Acet style tomorrow.

I think that the biggest disadvantage to welding over screw builds is that its harder and more expensive to learn to weld than it is to drill and tap.  its just an easier way for people without a lot of equipment to get one together without too much trouble.

I'll get some pics put up when I weld mine

hell if this turns out nice, I may weld my new bulgy AK74 kit as well

I think I'll probably screw it as I don't have experience with anything but a mig welder... or will a mig be OK?

I dont see why not, I'm just using oxy because the only other welder I have is a stick, and its a bit harder to throw down puddle welds with it

any ideas on locating the front trunnion? How do you normally do it?

I actually located everything off of the front trunnion

I fit it flush with the front, located my rails from there, and then placed the top cover on to locate the rear trunnion

I have decided to do an AMD 65 also. Where did you get your kit and frame? What were the qualities like? Some seller offer some written instructions, did your come with any?

Thanks

I got mine from centerfire systems, I just got the plain jane $79 one, it came with most of the original finish, the bore looks quite nice.  I dont mind the finish not being top notch since I'm going to park and gunkote the whole mess.

and no instructions to be seen, everything you need to know you can find on this board

ETA:  the reciever I got was from bent metal.  though in retrospect, for my first build I should have gone with an OOW receiver, as the one I got was kind of a pain since it had no marks for holes and getting a good template was also a PITA.  though now I've got a bending jig coming, those come pre drilled so no more dorking around with a template for me.

Well guys, my laser cut flat showed up today in the mail and I got the tracking # for my parts. I'm getting excited.. went and bought some tap/drill sets tonight and a whole slew of 10-32 and 8-32 screws. I'll keep everyone updated and hopefully get some pics when I get started. I am excited!!!

I think that if things aren't too busy I'm going to attempt to do a full start to finish write up much like yours Quasi. I'm hoping to take a ton of pics and do it start to finish detailing anything I run into with the laser cut reciever. Maybe with a combined effort we can create a document to help future newbies like myself get right off the ground with this.  Thanks for your interest and as of the last time I visited UPS my parts are out for delivery. Should be able to go home and start tonight.

I will keep everyone informed.

Are you guys talking about welding the trunions to the reciever? I'm new to AK building, I've been cruiseing around here awhile now and I've never heard of that methad. It sounds good to me though, as I am a certifyed welder. If you ever need to take it apart you can grind off the welds.
