Greetings to all and congratulations Mr. President:

I am interested in knowing how to remove an AK-74 front sight block so as to replace it with a threaded unit to allow the installation of a threaded brake and the added benefit of a bayonet lug.

The rifle in question is a Bulgarian SLR105 in 5.45

Thanks for reading.

IMO a rubber mallet won't have enough force.  If you have a press you could do it, you'd need to make a collar to brace against the push plate, and put the pressing force on the barrel.

*** DO NOT *** use a center punch or hardened chisel to hammer against the end of the barrel - the hard metal will dig into the end of the barrel!!!  Best to use a brass punch or a penny to absorb the force.  Ask me how I know ;)

I agree completely, I just replaced the front site base and gas block on a Bulgie 74 with a combo unit and the rubber mallet won't do it.  I didn't use a coller and press but rather a mapp torch and a brass deadblow hammer and chunck of oak.
The coller method would have been my prefrence although I couldn't get anything to get it chucked up properly.
