| I just wanted some opinions on what the best paint for an ak is. I tried dupicolor 500 degree and baked it, but it doesn't seem to hold up very well. |

I like GunKote very, very much. Kind of expensive for a little paint, though. Just make sure to read the directions and apply accordingly! VERY thin applications, especially if you're applying the matte paint (otherwise it WILL look like gloss or semi-gloss). Very durable if not caked on, too. |

If you are looking for a product that is easy to use, and very durable, look at using Norrells Moly Resin. Here is a link to a write up I did on AR15 refinishing using it. www.glocksunlocked.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10200 The above write up should give you a basic idea of how to do your AK. Eventually, I will write a similar article on refinishing for a bunch of different weapons, but for right now, I only have the AR15 and 1911 articles done. Next comes 870 shotgun, FN FAL, AK, and Glock. Here is the 1911 link. www.glocksunlocked.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10478 Mandatory pics.... Before ![]() After

I've had good luck with 1200 degree duplicolor. I painted my SAR-1 with it over a year ago and it's still flawless. I just did a receiver on another gun with 500 degree flat black duplicolor and so far it seems okay. I did put a scratch in it when I slipped with a screwdriver while installing some trigger parts, but that would of scratched any kind of finish. Both finishes I baked in the oven for a couple hours to help harden. |

Can't have too much time, just read the direction for temp and minimum time. I wouldn't leave it in the oven over-night, but for 5 or 6 hours will ensure that you evaporate as much solvent and other stuff as you can, within reason. ETA; would be nice to know if it would make any difference if temperature was raised after a couple of hours... I know dry enamel will withstand red-hot barrels, but is it okay to finish the cure at 400-500 degrees? |

You can order Gun-Kote direct if you have an air brush or spray gun. Brownells is the only place that has it in the spray can. You might want to check a local automotive paint store as some make custom spray cans, although it is not cheap. I got a cheap air brush and it works fine. KG Coatings |
