i understand that there are plenty of ways to do this. first off, the laser cut flats. do i need to weld the seems to finish the job? also the template flats. this doesnt sound too awful bad because its just some drilling of holes. the main concern is gutting out the magwell and trigger hole? what is the best way to do that? i was planning on the bending jig, but i've thought it over and the top bend might be a pain in the ass for a first timer. suggestions? |

Yes, you have to weld the laser-cut flats. Instructions for this are on Erik and Denzil's site: www.eandd.us/index.htm Bent blanks are the easiest way for you to build your own receiver. The magwell and other large holes are easily cut with a dremel and cleaned up with a file. AceArms has decent blanks and have recently updated them to a thicker material. They also have a decent tutorial for the build and their template is excellent. www.acearms.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi BentMetal has a couple different thickness blanks available (0.040" and 0.050"), so you can build a monstrously strong beast if you want. bentmetal.homestead.com/bentmetal.html BentMetal also has lower rails AND 5.45 go/no-go gauges in stock at this time... With either build, the current thinking is that the interior height should be 1.200". Some guys are doing this with a block milled to that dimension and sliding it forward into the receiver until it stops. Another option is to just add 1.200" to twice the thickness of the receiver material (i.e. 1.200" + (2 x 0.040") = 1.280") and cut the receiver front at that point. Just make sure the front cut is perpendicular to the top rails. Then attach the template and drill/cut the holes. Install the trunnion and then use the top cover to set the spacing for the stock tang or rear block for a tight fit. If you want to bend a flat, there are posts on this board and others concerning this. 555th has put up drawings and pictures of his jig on Gunsnet and Gunco.net (maybe on here too). www.gunco.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1013 I've built on OOW receivers, bent-blanks, and have a laser-cut in the works. I just ordered a few Tapco Flats through a group buy and am going to give those a shot when I get some time. 555th's jig is too simple not to at least try. Campybob should be along soon to cover the things I missed or forgot about. Seems he's built just about everything, so I'd listen. |

excellent. thank you. i really should get a welder so i can have fun with some of these projects.. i especially like the jig blueprints. is there anybody doing the jig? making them for the folks that cant weld at this time? i looked at one the other day as i was browsing and it doesn't do the top folds. |
