I am getting ready to build my amd  kit and I am kind of lost.  I was going to get the extended brake but now I am just going with a barrel extention. I will have 1)receiver 2)piston 3.4.5)trigger group.  I will have grips but I want to use the originals.  What other parts are there for the sixth?  What the deal with mag followers?

You say you have the receiver , piston , and trigger group that is five . With the barrel extention it  will be six since it also counts as an American made compliance part . You can also use American follwers and floor plates on your mags to have extra compliance parts .

The barrel extension cancels itself out, You are adding a muzzle device (a countable part) therefore it does nothing to help with your parts count.

Both Tapco and FAC sell the short AMD65 gas pistons.

You could go with followers or base plates, but you would have to change them out in every mag you own, and you could never use a drum in it.

This morning I ran across a U.S. made  muzzle brake that was long enough to make up the "short"  barrel difference on the AMD 65.   I can't find it now, the mfg. said they do not sell direct  but it supposedly is distributed by RPB industries, ......and I cannot find it on their site.
If I run across it I'll post again.

Just found it. It is the Krinkov style muzzle device, p/n AK26 ($20).
It's either that.  or the one pc. extended brake, all other changes will be tougher.
You could go with a U.S. made milled receiver, this eliminates a trunion. $ though.
