I'm wanting to install a 74-style brake on my MAK 90 the proper way, by threading the muzzle instead of pinning it in place.

Brownells sells the die and also what they call a thread alignment tool as found at this link www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=5735&title=AK+MUZZLE+BRAKE&s=13617#13617

Using the above tools is this a do it yourself job?

Let's start with the brake. The original deal tends to have a muzzle end big enough for an almost 1" threaded base, big expansion chamber, an insert for the first braking surface, and left/right crescent moon slits to direct gases onto the outer paddles for the second stage of brake. The Chicom brake has only 4 holes directing gasses out to the left/right paddles, and Ober and I found it half as effective when watching the other shoot them back to back from a bench.
Several places (incl akusa/global/igf) have brakes and adaptors which slip over the muzzle (similar to the original fsb/brake mount). Weld the adaptor to the fsb and leave the bbl alone is just my preference.
