I havent searched for the answer to this question, but here goes: If I make a receiver for an AK from a bent metal blank, do I need to put a serial number on it? What other information needs to be marked on the receiver, if any? Thanks in advance for any information.

I have checked into this.  As an individual, you are not required to put a serial number on your receiver.  Many parts sets come with a number on the trunion anyway.  That said, it is in your best interest to put some kind of marking on the receiver.  I mark mine with my name, town, state, and a number.  This is both pride in what I built and helpful should it be stolen.
If you are building a Krink short barreled rifle, all this changes.  You must put your name, town, and a serial # on the form 1 and on your gun. NFA stuff is different than the regular stuff.

the requirements for serializing a home built firearm are spelled out in usc18.

they are exactly as mg34ss states.

a private individual need not serialize his firearm, but it is strongly encouraged.

and it cannot ever be sold to anyone period!unless you register it has a title 1 weapon.

once built you have to keep possession of it!

That statement may be incorrect according to State of residence.
MARKING RECEIVER:
To not allow for confusion with the trunion serial number,I simply center punch braille alpha/numerics inside the receiver. These are placed near the PG nut with an auto center punch.
