Okay, first off you guys are BAD.  I was perfectly happy building/modifying/accessorizing AR's while leaving the AK's alone.  I figured, "Hey they're cheap, shot cheap bullets and almost never brake."  Since they are not as inherantly accurate as an AR and since I am NEVER going to reload 7.62X39 since ammo is cheap and plentiful, I decided to buy a bunch of mags (also cheap) and leave well enough alone.

But you guys have inspired/infected me and now I have decided to go over to the darkside.

I have a stock SAR1, shoots about 3 inch groups with irons and a shitty trigger at 100yds.  I want to replace/refinsh the stock, either modify/polish/smooth the trigger and install a muzzle brake (ak 74 style).

Now for the questions:

Redstar adjustable trigger.  Does it come out of adjustment?  Would it be better to just modify/polish my stock fire control parts?

Does anyone make a threaded front site base for 7.62?  Or can I modify the ones out there for the ak-74 to fit?  Is this the best way to go, i.e., remove the stock front site base and the just screw on the muzzle brake.  Or should I just weld a 7.62 brake on from global trades?

Thanks for your help,

Jim

jim,

yes...we are pure evil!

Redstar adjustable trigger. Does it come out of adjustment?

mine has not changed in over 5k rounds...and my guns run swimming in oil.

Would it be better to just modify/polish my stock fire control parts?

no way! the parts are only case hardened...even light polishing gets too close to the unhardened core material. the geometry changes required to get to the redstar level require the removal of too much material to stay in the cased zone.

the rsa group will improve your shooting quite a bit with the calm and consistant shot release. it really is the equal of almost all the ar-15 match triggers. another trick is to shave a little off the front sight post and run one of the apeture rear sights.

Does anyone make a threaded front site base for 7.62?

no. akms used a 14x1mm left hand threaded bbl..

Or can I modify the ones out there for the ak-74 to fit?

refer to the sticky post above regarding bbl. diameters. while i'm pretty certain you could bore an ak-74 fsb to fit your 7.62 bbl. journal, i would have to do the math to see how much stock removal is required.

Is this the best way to go, i.e., remove the stock front site base and the just screw on the muzzle brake. Or should I just weld a 7.62 brake on from global trades?

you might want to talk to rs39 and ask him about his setup. i installed his thread adapter and usa made ak-74 brake that was sized for 7.62. it seemed to work out well and only requires welding the adapter and brake to the fsb.

Thanks for the reply Campybob.

I'll order the redstar trigger this week.

As to the muzzle brake.  Which adapter do I need?  Global trades makes several brakes that seem like what I'm looking for.  Of course, I'm in uncharted waters here and open to suggestions.

The only reason I'm really considering global trades, is that I'm planning on one of their blond furniture sets and wanted to save on shipping.

Thanks,

Jim
