| Hello all, I am pondering an operation on a mak 90 ak. I would like to move the front sight block back along the barrel until it is up against or very close to the gas block. Then I would cut, recrown, and thread the barrel to an overall length of about 14.5 inches. Then pin a flash hider in place to get my overall length up to 16 inches. Is this operation feasible to do myself and do any of you have any advise for the procedure? Thanks! |

Do you have a press and a lathe? If so, its very doable. Your process will be as follows: 1. Press out barrel pin 2. Press out barrel 3. Press out/hammer out FSB pins 3. Press off FSB 4. Reprofile and cut barrel 5. Press barrel back in and confirm headspacing 6. Press barrel pin back in 7. Install FSB 8. Make sure FSB is on straight 9. Drill FSB holes and press/hammer pins Or you could do the following method: 1. Buy AMD In all reality, its probably not worth it unless you already have the tools and know how, and you're really bored. It is doable, but you might be better off buying something that already has the parts configured the way you want. |

i have neither press or lathe... Then I wouldn't attempt it on a Mak-90. I've gotten away with taking off FSB's and GB's with a hammer and brass punch but the Chinese barrel components are typically on VERY tight. I would just buy one of the AMD's that Centerfire is selling. |
i pondered a sim thing but with a saiga 5.45. i wanted it short and light. i ended up getting a kreb's gas block sight combo (very nice) and threaded the barrel and put a small tapco break on it. i was going to cut the barrel like you are saying but ended up not doing it. if i ever change my mind the hard part is already done.
