Killing some time I was browsing through the build and it rekindled my urge for a 74 underfolder. This will be my first build. (sorry for the noob questions) I havent found any complete ak74u except for custom ones for $800+. I am looking at the underfolder kit from Apex.
https://www.apexgunparts.com/product_info.php/cPath/21_91/products_id/929 I found this parts kit: http://dpharms.com/presale-only-bulgarian-wood-ak74-kit-545-p-77.html I would like to get a complete barrel assembly. I dont know what receiver to get for it. I have read things about NDS, but I dont know if there is a better one. Also, will a ak47 underfolder stock fit on a ak74? Also, if the receiver is unfinished (bare metal), is it best to get it finished before it is riveted with the barrel assembly or after? Thanks |

It would not be hard to take a Bulgarian kit (with or without a US barrel) and instead of using a fixed stock receiver use an underfolder receiver. Nodak is the best way to go for the price and quality. As far as finishing the metal I do like to at least apply some sort of anti-corrosive like duracoat but even a parkerize finish would be good. If you are going to do something like parkerizing you probably don't have to worry about it, but all others you are likely to leave things unprotected in my opinion. |

just to make sure... this parts kit, I can drop the barrel assembly in and rivet it to a receiver without removing anything with the press that is $200, right?

Sure, I guess. This parts kit is like all stamped receiver parts kits and you can either press the barrel out of the front trunion and rivet the trunions into the receiver and then press the barrel back in or some simply buck rivets against the barrel. Of course with a barrelless kit there is also the headspacing and grooving the barrel for the barrel pin. Riveting on the trigger guard. Unless you get a barrel already assembled there is also that (pressing on the barrel assembly components and grooving the barrel for their pins). I might be missing something, but wanted to make sure you were asking all that and not something more simple. That rivet jig you have pictured will help with riveting the front trunion to the receiver if you remove the barrel. There is another jig for the trigger guard and a bunch of ways to do the rear trunion rivets. |

NDS-2 (NOT NDS-2EZ)
This gives you a good receiver with the right ejector for the front end. Then a Polish or Romy underfolder. Transfer the dimensions from the trunion to the receiver. I like to make the UF stock hole slightly undersize and then ream after trunion install because even on pre-cut receivers like the -1P There is some variance between rear trunions. |
