It's been a few years since I've built any AKs and I cannot remember the size of the E-clips used to hold the pins instead of using a shepards hook or retainer plate.  Can anyone refresh my memory?

Yeah, they fall off during shooting and either jam your rifle or it goes full auto.

I'd kinda recommend against using e clips.

Hairpin clips, retaining plates, or shepard's hooks do work. BSW

use the hitch pins(hair pins) take an axis pin with you to home depot/lowes etc and get one that fits the slot nicely.I can't think of the size off hand.just take the axis pin with ya.The E-clips suck.

E-clips really don't work very well simply because you can't find any that fit tight enough.  I tool my pins to Lowes and Home Depot with no luck.  They fall out when you would wish they wouldn't (last time was at a carbine/pistol class, fortunately I had a few AKs and was able to switch but very disappointed).  For the price you might as well get a retaining plate or Chinese shephard's hook.  Of use the long spring for the full auto part and clip it and slide it between the two pins (without a doubt very secure, just a little harder to remove than a retaining plate).

My E-clips from Home Depot run fine so far, only 100 rounds through my Romy-G build.

One will break or walk off the pin, probably before you get to 1K.

Go with the retainer plate.

I used e-clips on my first AK, and they seemed to be holding fine.  I put it in the safe and didn't shoot it for a while.  Then I ordered a RSA retaining plate and when I went to install it, one of the e-clips was still on its pin and the other was nowhere to be found.

For those who think e-clips are ok because they have not fell out after 100 rounds I have to say neither did mine.  Not until I was in a defensive carbine/pistol class did mine fall out and my pins walk and my FCG fail to function.  Had this been in a similar scenario as the class (an actual situation where I was in a defensive/combative mode) this would have been fatal on my part.  Sure, none of us ever want to need to use our firearms in our self defense but if/when comes the time (assuming it does despite how unlikely it is) you don't necessary get to choose your weapon and which ever it is you will want it to be reliable.  E-clips are only waiting to cause a problem and you never know when that will be.  Retaining plates won't!

+1

My e clips worked perfectly while zeroing and doing some practice.

Of course they fell off during the once a year night match and screwed me.
