Top wood on the gas tube , How do you get the wood off

Hold the gas tube with a pliers or something and twist the wood off.

eta: With the gas tube taken off the rifle.

I usually hold the gas tube in an adjustable wrench

Me too, some channel locks or crescent wrench works great for holding it (there are even AK wrenches specifically for doing it). The one thing I would advise is put pressure on the backside of forend, not one side or the other or it will probably crack (assuming it is wood, if the black plastic on the Bulgarian AK 74s you'll be fine).
