Can screws be used? Has anyone ever welded them in? Thanks in advance.

Yes they can be tapped for screws, I wouldn't weld it but that too can be done.

At one time you could buy center supports threaded for 8-32 screws.
Maybe you can still buy those.
If you use screws, red Loc Tite will be your friend.
