From which side do you drive the front pin in the sight base out to install/remove the spring and plunger?

Either side.  I don't know of any AK's that have tapered pins.

The pins are not tapered.

You drive it out from the side that wasn't used to drive it in. This is inconsequential on some guns, but on others you may find (upon close inspection) that one side of the pin is slightly mushroomed from installation. If you see the mushroom on one side, avoid it and drive it out from the other side.

On several guns I've noticed that they appeared to switch sides at the factory - front pin in from one side, rear pin in from the other.
