Just received my "Gas Riston Retaining Pin"  (Interarms brand) from Brownell's. It looks nothing like the pin/rivet in myfakename's tutorial. It's simply a 1/8" x 5/8" roll pin. While it would seem to be simpler to install, I have to wonder if it will hold up to use. Does anyone out there have any experience with these? If so, how has it held up?

I simply used a 1/8 in roll pin from the hardware store and 500 rounds later no problems.

The most important thing is that it is installed correctly so that it will not walk out when firing.

I used a finish nail cut off to the proper length and then peened the ends into the larger hole in the carrier.  The nail is a nice soft steel,  Works great.

Yup, I used a nail also.
Peened it and after around 1500 rounds over 2 years, it is holding up fine.

It is only there to keep the piston from unscrewing.

I also used a nail. No issues yet.

That pin is only there to stop the piston from unscrewing. You do realize that the piston does not need to bottom against the carrier? Additionally a little wobble is intended in the assembly.

Thanks for the input! I'm more than a bit relieved.

Splicenut,

If you want a proper AK gas piston rivet, just send me an IM with your shipping addy, and I'll send you one on the house. Don't use a roll pin / nail... do it right.
