If you are asking if one could just build a complete AK, the answer is yes!
If you have a kit to model off - or at least some VERY good dimentions. A FULL machine shop complete with milling machine and lathe Much knowledge and experience making barrels. Full heat-treating facilities. Lots of $$$ (expect to go through many prototypes) The appropriate licenses to keep the wrong people from knocking. In practical terms, it's not something your average person ( or even a somewhat above average person) could do. Were talking weathly here. So to answer your question, I suppose one's options would be to wish in one hand... ... ... |

You could try your hand at making your own mags using the press and welder.
I don't actually have any of those tools yet but I'm planning on getting all of them eventually...right now the issue is space at my parents place. We want to get a mini mill and small lathe to put down in the basement and turn part of the basement into a workshop for me to use for gunsmithing projects. |

So far, AFAIK, no one in North America has begun production of the following essential AK parts:
-bolts -carriers -gas blocks -trunions (although there are US made milled receivers that incorporate the trunion). Every other general AK part (AKM pattern) that I know of has been made in large numbers in the US. But, we still rely on those 4 critical parts for our AKs. |

I have looked into making those parts because of the fact that no one makes them in the U.S. I have the necessary machines in my shop to make them but whats stopping me is the fact that items like the bolt and carrier are expensive to begin with and a U.S. made version would be even more expensive as you could imagine, how many people are going to pay a premium price to have a U.S. version when they can pick up a imported on for half the price? |

Actually "Turbothis" on the AK Forum has been offering machined from scratch Yugo fixed rear trunnions for a while now. I believe CBR900 was talking about the front Trunnion, which is the more intensive part to manufacture. Also I was under the impression that the ATF does not count the rear Trunnion as a 922(r) Compliance part. |

I did see where Tapco is selling an American made SKS complete bolt. Not quite the same I know, but IMO just a matter of time. No one made an American made AK barrel either, as parts dry up, as long as its legal someone will make them. |

However, if that does happen, I can guarantee that an AK made from newly manufactured US parts would cost much more than we are getting them for now. |

No question it will cost more than milsurp parts, but machining is more automated than it was when these parts kits where first built. I bet an entire American made AK could be made for about the cost of a Mini14 or a low end AR. |
