Here are a few pics of my Thanksgiving project.  My Bro. and I each built one during Thanksgiving and his gun is 1/2" shorter than this one and no muzzle attatchment. I will get pics of them both together during Christmas.  We live 350 miles away from each other.  When we get together we try to build cool projects.  Oh its 5 7/8"

Very, very cool.. now with the bullet points:

  • How does it run? Do you get a facefull-o-flashbang?

  • I like the handguard hanger in front of the FSB / gas block. How is the flash hider retained?

  • Can you offer a few details on the gas piston / recoil spring guide?

  • Yeah, I kinda posted this on the run this morning.  I have only shot one 20 rounder through it and it was funner than gum but it was in the light of day so no flash report yet.  I think for the evening shoot I will use a slant brake or something that is not designed to hide the flash like the bird cage.

The bird cage tightens against the hanger that pushes against the handguard.  It all snugs up perty tight.  I did this by chopping the section out of the barrel that the hanger fits on.  Then I bored it out to 14 mm which makes a sleeve that slides on the smallest step on the barrel.

The piston guide rod is a piece of 5/32 piano wire.  The original spring retainer wires were cut about 1 1/2" long and the piano wire was soldered in between them.

The pistons are real fun!  The carriers are kinda hard and tuff as heck so tapping them is not easy.  My lathe is not big enough to hold everything tight enough to tap and get it real straight so I tapped it, threaded a piece of stainless and tightened it real tight.  Then I rigged it up so I could turn the whole carrier to turn the piston.  That way the piston runs true to the carrier not the threads.

One other interesting note, The Pistol grip is an original Romy grip that has been molyresined and baked.

Awesome!  That has to be the shortest I have seen (and probably the shortest possible, referring to your brothers).  Very nice job!  I will be picking mine up this week after it has been on loan to some one else for the past month.  Careful with the slant brake though, make sure you wear hearing protection or you will know what it's like to be flash banged.  We took mine out coyote hunting a few months ago and several of us shot it without hearing protection and we all got sick (some threw up).  That's when I swapped out the original slant brake for the birdcage style that came with my Yugo M90.  It's nice because you don't have to put a single US made part on the pistols like you do with the rifles.  And having shot mine with 30 round mags, it's fun but 20 round mags just feel better.  Although I will eventually get a drum for mine.

What size hole did you drill in the barrel for the gas port?

Then you might want to take a look at THIS pistol, the link to which I am not using to hijack this thread on a member's short-barreled pistol build.

Note: I do not endorse this in any way, shape or fashion. That said, I do think it's pretty damn funny.. Take a look at the videos, the flash from the ejection port is just nuts. Obviously, bullet is also unstabilized.

I used a #28, As I remember that is the largest I could get through the gas block but I know a #25 went through the barrel.
