Is a press required to install a front sight base? If so, can it be pressed on with a 1/2 ton press? I'm looking at an interference fit of .0025. Thanks.

Did you measure the 0.0025" fit, or are you taking that figure from somewhere else? It just seems like a lot..

The last FSB that I installed was done on a 12ton hydraulic press. It went with essentially zero effort on the jack lever.. not much more effort than would be required to drive the press without any actual work in place. This was a new RPK barrel, with sights / blocks from an original barrel. No idea if the new bbl was US or import.

At least in this case, it could have been done with a small arbor press.

I would try it with the half-ton; you might be just fine.

Thanks, Legendre. The barrel mikes at .5925 where the front sight goes, and the sight I'm putting on is spec'd at .590 but I haven't received it yet. The spec may be a nominal value, but I expect it to be close. I'm thinking that with some heat first, a small arbor press should do it. I'm not sure of what a typical fit would be for this application.
