How hard would you guys rate building your own AK?  I know its not as simple as building an AR but is it possible for most to do it?  I don't personally know anyone who has built their own so I wanted to hear what you folks thought.

once you comprehend the build and know the tricks and pitfalls to avoid, it is a piece of cake!

Thanks guys.  I do realize you need to purchase the tools that are required for it is just a thought for the future.

Best to have someone help with the first one.

how well do you understand the micrometer?  the more you measure, and the more accurately you measure, the better everything will fit and the happier you'll be in the end.

i did my first all alone (besides this board for info) in my townhouse basement with a hammer, hand drill, some cheap punches, chisels (to take tops of the rivets, i know that just is wrong but that's how i did it ), taps, screws, alan wrenches and lok-tite.

if you don't want to buy a press you can use screws or u drives.  i've done it with screws, u drives and rivets.  ALL methods done correctly work, trust me.

read the stickies at the top, take your time and you can do it no problem

JUST DO IT!!

I did my first with about the same tools as you and removed the barrel and riveted.

Later I did by a press, but no jigs.

If you are willing to take your time and stick with it, odds are you can do it.

How did you bend the reciever without a jig and a press.... I have access to a large manual break and thought about that... I even thought about heating the metal to soften it then bending it, I mean it would basically just heat treat that part as well, I dont see what it would hurt, i figure I would just buy some extra flats cuz chances are one or two will get messed up

you can also buy a bent blank.  the bends are done but you have to drill the holes for the fcg, grip, and mag well.  i'd rather carve these out than try to press a flat and then have to trim anyhow.

I thought about the 100% and the 80% pre bent, but dont want to have to fork any $$ for an FFL out, and dont really wanna have to line up and drill holes either... I think im just gonna make the poormans jig I saw on Gunco today

NDS receivers are 100%...all holes drilled....worth every bit the $55 plus transfer (about $20)

Full heat treated, blued, 100% spot on.....saves a lot of trouble and if you need to liquidate firearms if you ever go broke you could sell them a lot easier....
