This is my first build, so perhaps it's not that odd of a question.  When I pull the bolt carrier back, the bolt stops traveling back at the location shown in the first picture.  It stops solid in the exact same spot. It doesn't happen every time, but I need to figure it out.

The bolt goes to about .25" from exposing the ejector and then acts like it's hit a brick wall. The only way to recover is to let it go forward and try again. It doesn't matter how hard you ram the carrier back, if it hits whatever obstruction, it stops.

The ejector is not hung up since I can move the bolt head around a little with my finger. I can't figure out what it's hitting yet. If I turn the rifle upside down, it doesn't seem to happen???

Here's another pic of the same hit point but from the outside to show how far back the carrier can be pulled.

Any ideas?

did you trim the ejector? I think the ejectors that come with the flats are longer to work with 5.45, and need to be trimmed shorter to work with 7.62.

Yeah, that was my previous problem.  The ejector was so long that it was pushing the bolt way over to one side (side of the safety), which combined with the hammer force was causing the carrier to jump the rail.  I dremeled it down to where the bolt is no longer deflecting to the side.  And once I resolved that problem, I uncovered this problem.

Problem solved.  I found a nick in the top rail of the receiver where the bolt drops in during assembly.  I smoothed the nick out, just a little bit, and it works like a champ now.
