Several years ago there was a magazine article about building a MOA (or less) AK. It was either in one of the Precision Shooting mags or one of the thick annual editions of a regular magazine. Anybody either have a copy of it or know which mag and issue it was in?

OK, then. Since no one has seen the article....

Has anyone built a REALLY accurate AK? What did they do different? I know trigger work and lightening the bolt carrier. Reinforcing the barrel/receiver area. A new barrel with a tighter chamber?

I suspect further accuracy would also requier a stiffer reciever.  Milled would be could, but some kind of stiffening support might be attached to a stamped one.  If there is room.  I'm thinking there isn't though.

I'll be building from a flat. I don't see why I couldn't add some reinforcing.

Physics my good man....you could add some sideways reinforcing...but you would be much more challenged adding reinforcing from front to back.

Moreso -the bolt carrier rides on a relatively flimsy rail, and while its simplicty and elegance are part of the AK's lovable quirkiness, its the reason it generally won't by the most accurate weapon around. Now on a billet milled piece you have some more meat and heft which which to tighten the tolerances up.

I would suspect many of these kits that are around these days have a decent amount of muzzle and throat erosion which will effect your accuracy. Also - remember your killer scope is mounted on a killer mount, which is riveted to a piece of 1mm (maybe 1.5 if your lucky) steel.

I'm not knocking the AK - its just when i need a long range tack driver - I choose another toy from my toy chest.

I'm not looking for a tack driver. I've got an AR, and will eventually build something better on a Nesikia Bay action... I am thinking about building an AR though. I would like to improve the inherent accuracy somewhat while I'm at it. I know it can be done... I just thought someone on this board would have done it already.

Check out the barrel whip on the ak that is shown in that slow motion film from the history channel. I bet you could have a very high quality barrel made if you wanted to spend the money, plus a red star arms trigger and handloads and make some difference over stock, but it seems like there is a practical limit to what you are going to accomplish.

I wonder if there would be much improvement with mounting an optic to the barrel itself?

I believe that article is on the precision shooting magazine site.  I read it a while back and the big change they did was chambered a new barrel for a different round.  I wouldnt consider that accurising the AK but there was some other possably useful info in there too.  If i can track it down again ill post a link.

This isnt the link i had in mind but here is the text.  The other article had pictures:
