How are you guys spacing the rails when you weld them in?

I have heard that a 1/4" drill bit creates the right amount of space. Is this true?

Several tutorials mention this method.  I have not gotten to this step yet but this is what I planned to do.

There is no one size fits all dimension, they may even vary left to right. Use whatever size drill bit it takes to line up the rails with the trunnion.

Yes this works just fine. I used it on a Rommy build this summer. It depends really on two things, receiver thickness and if the upper rails are setup straight and correctly.

It worked just fine on a build that I used a .064 steel receiver, so I am pretty sure you will be fine.

Even if there were a one size fits all dimension, it would not be 1/4" (which is 6.35mm) it would be either 6 or 6.5mm. There are no fractional dimensions in a AK

Start with a 1/4" drill bit, clamp them down and then try the bolt to ensure there's no hang-ups. Better to be a tad high than too low on the rails.
